Microchip Launches PIC32CK 32-bit Microcontroller with Hardware Security Module

Sunday,May 05,2024

New laws and regulations effective since 2024 impose stricter requirements on cybersecurity, from consumer IoT devices to critical infrastructure. Meeting these new security compliance requirements can be complex, expensive, and time-consuming from both product and supply chain perspectives. To provide developers with embedded security solutions enabling them to design applications compliant with regulations, Microchip Technology recently announced the launch of the new PIC32CK 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) series. This series integrates a Hardware Security Module (HSM) subsystem and an Arm® Cortex®-M33 core using TrustZone® technology to help isolate and ensure device security.

The PIC32CK SG is the market's first 32-bit device to combine the robust security of the HSM with TrustZone technology, a hardware-based security enclave. Microchip's latest innovation for mid-range MCUs offers designers a cost-effective embedded security solution compliant with the latest network security requirements. The built-in HSM provides high-level security for authentication, secure debugging, secure boot, and secure updates, while TrustZone technology adds extra protection for critical software functions. The HSM accelerates various symmetric and asymmetric encryption standards, true random number generation, and secure key management.

Microchip's PIC32CK MCU supports ISO 26262 functional safety and ISO/SAE 21434 cybersecurity standards. To enhance flexibility and cost-effectiveness, the PIC32CK MCU series offers various options to adjust security levels, memory, and connectivity bandwidth according to the requirements of the final application. Available options include dual-zone flash memory of up to 2 MB, 512 KB SRAM, and various connectivity options such as 10/100 Ethernet, CAN FD, and USB.

Rod Drake, Vice President of Microchip's MCU32 and MPU32 Business Unit, stated, "The newly enacted requirements make security a necessity for most IoT devices. The PIC32CK delivers a high level of hardware-based security for mid-range MCU applications, achieving cost-effectiveness. Microchip's tool ecosystem and security expertise help customers address the complexity of new requirements and support customer products throughout their lifecycle."

For products in the supply chain requiring additional security protection, such as industrial designs, medical devices, home appliances, and consumer IoT devices, PIC32CK will be supported through Microchip's Trust Platform Design Suite, which can be configured as a service. This platform enables secure factory configuration of keys, certificates, and IP without revealing these secrets in the supply chain.

Development Tools

Microchip's software platforms, including MPLAB® Harmony v3 and Trust Platform Design Suite, support the PIC32CK MCU series. PIC32CK SG and PIC32CK GC Curiosity Ultra development boards (including EV33A17A and EV44P93A) also support the PIC32CK series.
