Nordic and Sisvel to Simplify Cellular IoT SEP Licensing Process

Tuesday,May 21,2024

Nordic Semiconductor has reached a new agreement with patent pool management company Sisvel regarding the licensing of standard essential patents (SEPs) for LTE-M and NB-IoT cellular technologies. This agreement offers developers an easy option to access Sisvel’s licensing pool for LTE-M and NB-IoT radio technology standards.

Specifically, the program provides IoT device manufacturers with a simple and efficient way to obtain end-product licenses from over 30 patent holders of LTE-M and NB-IoT SEPs through Nordic as the cellular module supplier.

The agreement addresses licensing challenges commonly faced by device developers in fields such as smart health, smart energy, smart cities, and asset tracking.

By offering standardized licenses, the agreement will reduce business uncertainty, enabling companies to focus on developing new innovative products and services for the IoT market.

Oyvind Birkenes, Executive Vice President of Nordic’s Long Range Division, commented: “Nordic Semiconductor has always been at the forefront of wireless technology, and we understand the importance of accessible and standardized licensing for the development of the IoT industry. We believe this solution is a significant step towards a more efficient cellular IoT future.”

Mattia Fogliacco, CEO of Sisvel, stated: “We are delighted to establish a unique licensing program for cellular IoT with the support of over 30 patent owners. We believe the new agreement with Nordic addresses a critical need in the IoT ecosystem. Our goal is to create a balanced and transparent licensing environment that supports innovation and development for all stakeholders.”

Kristian Sæther, Director of Cellular IoT Products at Nordic, said: “Over the past year, we have worked together with Sisvel and the SEP holders in their pool to facilitate this agreement. The IoT market will benefit from increased licensing transparency and predictability. This new agreement provides our customers with efficiency and predictability. We look forward to seeing our peers and competitors recognize the importance of this work and join the solution pool, making the entire cellular IoT market more predictable and operating in a fair environment.”
