NAND flash memory market will be worth $30.0 billion in 2013, rising by 12% from $26.8 billion in 2012, due to the increasing use of HD video content, social networking, low power consumption, and “instant on” features in consumer, communication, and computing devices, according to market research firm IC Insights.
Smartphone, the largest contributor, is projected to represent 26% of the total NAND Flash market. 2013 will see 975 million smartphones of the overall cellphone shipments, accounting for around 56%. Smartphone contains about 9x more NAND flash than a basic or enhanced cellphone, IC said.
Solid-state drives (SSDs) expects to make up 13% of NAND flash memory sales in 2013 as the storage medium becomes a challenger to hard disk storage in notebook computers. SSDs are enlarging application in servers, installed car navigation systems, industrial equipment, and digital video recorders (DVRs).
Tablet PCs and HHP devices—handheld players such as music/video players and handheld game systems—are predicted to be significant consumers of NAND flash in 2013 as well. Tablets, the fastest growing segment of the PC market, will ship 167 million units in 2013. 16GB of NAND flash starts tablets’ influence to NAND flash industry.
